The Guru who was adored and respected by both Hindus and Muslims proclaimed
"Na koi Hindu, na Mussalman"
By the above he maintained that external labels of religiosity wouldn't work but only and only remembering the ONE ALMIGHTY GOD and performing good deeds is all that is going to take one towards salvation. He mingled with the lowest of the lowly and showered on them love and compassion.
The founder of the new faith of Sikhism gave equal footing to the other half of mankind, women, and said that no one had the right to call them bad because it was the woman with whom a man is related throughout his life and she was the one who gave birth to prophets, saints and kings alike.
His code of conduct for his believers, "Kirt Karo, Naam Japo, Wand Chhako" meaning that one should "Work hard, always be in His Rememberance and Share one's earnings with others" has been the foundation for Sikhism to be developed in the future course of time.
His way of preaching was simple. The "Rabab" which was gifted to him by his dearest eldest sister, with whom he had a very affectionate relationship, was played by his best friend and mate for life, Bhai Mardana Ji who belonged to a low caste of Mirasis and was a Muslim by faith, when the Guru sang his hymns. His hymns were in simple Panjabi language and were poetic which helped mould the people across faiths and helped them believe only in One Nirankar (One God).
Lastly after his four "Udasis" or trips across the globe, when he came back, he settled in Kartarpur Sahib, where in his old age he practically taught what he preached and ploughed his fields. With the earnings he helped setup "Langar" or free Community Kitchen food where people from different castes, communities and religions sat together and could partake their meals under one roof.
Wishing everyone across the globe "A Very Happy 550th Prakash Utsav of Baba Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji". May his teachings help us all to live together in peace, love and compassion irrespective of our religious alliances and castes.
