पानीपत की गलियां-1 (कचहरी बाजार)

आज पानीपत की सैर का दिन है। हमने लाल बत्ती चौक, जीटी रोड से अंसार चौक की तरफ यात्रा शुरू की, जो कचहरी बाजार से होकर गुजरती है। यह बाजार पानीपत का एक ऐतिहासिक हिस्सा है, जहां आजादी से बहुत पहले, लगभग 1920 के आसपास, एक कोर्ट हुआ करती थी। उस समय यह कोर्ट किसी मकान की पहली मंजिल पर स्थित थी, और तहसीलदार, जो मजिस्ट्रेट का पद भी संभालते थे, यहीं बैठकर न्यायिक कार्य करते थे। बाजार की हलचल के बीच न्याय की प्रक्रिया चलती रहती थी, और आसपास की दुकानें इस ऐतिहासिक माहौल को और जीवंत बनाती थीं।

उस दौर में इस बाजार में कुछ प्रसिद्ध दुकानें थीं, जैसे पंडित मायदयाल की पान की दुकान, जहां लोग स्वादिष्ट पान का मजा लेते थे, और तेलू राम पकोड़े वाले की दुकान, जो अपने कुरकुरे और मसालेदार पकोड़ों के लिए मशहूर थी। ये दुकानें न केवल स्थानीय लोगों के लिए आकर्षण का केंद्र थीं, बल्कि बाजार की जीवंतता का प्रतीक भी थीं। लेकिन समय के साथ सब कुछ बदल गया। सन 1947 में देश की आजादी और विभाजन के बाद, यह बाजार साइकिल मार्केट में तब्दील हो गया। कोर्ट को कबड़ी कोठी में स्थानांतरित कर दिया गया, और बाजार का चरित्र पूरी तरह बदल गया। अब यहां साइकिलों की दुकानें और मरम्मत की वर्कशॉप्स का बोलबाला था।

इस परिवर्तन में पंडित मायदयाल पानवाड़ी की दुकान छोटी पड़ गई, जबकि देवान चंद टक्कर की साइकिल दुकान बड़ी और सफल हो गई। लेकिन इतिहास में एक दुखद अध्याय जुड़ा, जब 15 मार्च 1966 को एक बड़ा हादसा हुआ। उस दिन उपद्रवियों ने देवान चंद टक्कर और उनके दो साथियों को दुकान में बंद करके जिंदा जला दिया। यह घटना पानीपत के इतिहास में एक काला धब्बा बन गई, जो साम्प्रदायिक हिंसा और मानवीय क्रूरता की याद दिलाती है। इस हादसे ने पूरे बाजार को हिला दिया और स्थानीय समुदाय में लंबे समय तक दर्द की छाप छोड़ी।

आज का कचहरी बाजार पूरी तरह बदल चुका है। यहां अब बड़े-बड़े शोरूम खड़े हैं, जहां आधुनिक उत्पादों की बिक्री होती है, और स्वर्णकारों की दुकानें चमक-दमक से भरी हुई हैं। सोने-चांदी के आभूषणों की चमक बाजार को एक नई पहचान देती है। पुरानी दुकानें और ऐतिहासिक इमारतें अब आधुनिकता की चपेट में आ गई हैं, लेकिन बाजार का नाम वही पुराना है – कचहरी बाजार। यह नाम समय की धारा में बहते हुए भी अटल रहा है, जो हमें अतीत की याद दिलाता है कि कैसे जगहें बदलती हैं, लेकिन उनकी कहानियां हमेशा जीवित रहती हैं। पानीपत की यह सैर हमें इतिहास, परिवर्तन और स्मृतियों की यात्रा पर ले.

Today is the day for sightseeing in Panipat. We started our journey from Lal Batti Chowk on GT Road towards Ansar Chowk, passing through what is known as Kachahri Bazaar. This market is a historical part of Panipat, where long before independence, around the 1920s, there used to be a court. At that time, the court was located on the first floor of a house, and the Tehsildar, who also served as a magistrate, would sit there to handle judicial proceedings. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the market, the wheels of justice turned, and the surrounding shops added vibrancy to this historical ambiance.

In those days, the market featured some famous shops, such as Pandit Maidayal's paan shop, where people enjoyed delicious betel leaves, and Telu Ram's pakode shop, renowned for its crispy and spicy fritters. These shops were not only attractions for locals but also symbols of the market's lively character. However, with time, everything changed. After 1947, following India's independence and partition, this area transformed into a cycle market. The court was shifted to Kabdi Kothi, and the market's identity completely altered. Now, it was dominated by bicycle shops and repair workshops.

In this transformation, Pandit Maidayal's paan shop became smaller and less prominent, while Dewan Chand Takkar's cycle shop grew large and successful. But a tragic chapter was added to history when, on March 15, 1966, a major incident occurred. On that day, rioters locked Dewan Chand Takkar and his two companions inside the shop and burned them alive. This event became a dark stain in Panipat's history, reminding us of communal violence and human cruelty. The incident shook the entire market and left a lasting scar on the local community.

Today's Kachahri Bazaar has completely changed. Now, it houses large showrooms where modern products are sold, and jewelers' shops sparkle with gold and silver ornaments. The glitter of jewelry gives the market a new identity. The old shops and historical buildings have succumbed to modernity, but the market's name remains the same – Kachahri Bazaar. This name has stood firm amidst the flow of time, reminding us of the past and how places evolve, yet their stories endure. This tour of Panipat takes us on a journey through history, change, and memories.
