घुमकड़ की डायरी-14. My visit to the Chicago. Non Violent resistance against racism .

 

विश्व धर्म संसद,शिकागो में एक विशिष्ट वक्ता के तौर पर एक ऐसे महान व्यक्तित्व का नाम भी था जिसने अपने पूरे जीवन को मानवाधिकार , शांतिपूर्ण अहिंसक परिवर्तन तथा एकता और सद्भाव को समर्पित किया । वह नाम था  महात्मा गांधी के अविरल अनुयायी जेम्स मॉरिस लॉसन का ।  

95 वर्षीय यह व्यक्तित्व को सुनने के लिए दुनियाभर से आए लोग उत्सुक रहे ,परंतु कार्यक्रम से पूर्व अंतिम क्षणों में वे अपनी अस्वस्थता के कारण नहीं आ सके।  Satureday Free School से जुड़े युवाओं ने ऐसे महान व्यक्तित्व के सम्मान में शिकागो में ही कलाप्रिया फाउंडेशन के सभागार में ही एक विशेष सत्र का आयोजन किया जिसमे जेम्स मॉरिस लॉसन के बड़ी संख्या में प्रशंसकों ने भाग लिया ।  इस कार्यक्रम में भी अमेरिकन, एफ्रो अमेरिकन, चीन ,पाकिस्तान, वियतनाम , कोरिया सहित हमारे देश भारत से आए अनेक प्रतिनिधि शामिल रहे।

     जेम्स मॉरिस लॉसन का जन्म 12 सितंबर , 1928 को हुआ था और उनकी ख्याति एक अमेरिकन सक्रिय कार्यकर्ता और यूनिवर्सिटी प्रोफेसर के रूप में है । उन्हें मानवाधिकार के लिए अहिंसात्मक संघर्षों के  एक अग्रणी सिद्धान्तकार तथा नीति निर्धारक माना जाता है । वर्ष 1960 में प्रसिद्ध नशविल्ल स्टूडेंट्स मूवमेंट तथा स्टूडेंट्स नॉन वायलेंट कोर्डिनेटिंग कमिटी के नेता रहे । अपने इन्हीं कार्यकलापों के कारण उन्हें बैंडरबिल्ट यूनिवर्सिटी से निष्कासित कर दिया गया जहां वे समाज शास्त्र के प्राध्यापक के पद पर कार्य करते थे। उनके अमेरिकन मिलिट्री की जबरदस्ती भर्ती के विरोध करने और भर्ती के लिए मना करने पर  गिरफ्तार किया गया और दो साल की सजा सुनाई गई ,पर 13 माह बाद ही उन्हें जेल से बाहर कर दिया गया । वे मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर के अनन्य सहयोगी एवम सलाहकार रहे और दोनों ने मिल कर अनेक संघर्षों का नेतृत्व किया। बाद में उन्होंने लॉस एंजेलिस में पास्टर के तौर पर 25 साल तक काम किया । मेथोडिस्ट मिशन के तहत उन्होंने नागपुर ,इंडिया जाकर उन्होंने गहराई से महात्मा गांधी के अहिंसात्मक प्रतिरोध के सत्याग्रह का अध्ययन किया  और वापिस आकर अपने गांधीवादी विचारों से ओतप्रोत साथी मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर के साथ मिल कर अनेक सत्याग्रह आंदोलन में भाग लिया। वर्तमान संदर्भ में वे अमेरिका की भूमि पर एक जीवंत गांधी है जो बापू जीवन ,विचार और संदेश से  परिपूर्ण है ।

      मुझे इस बात की प्रसन्नता है कि इस अवसर पर प्रसिद्ध विचारक एवम चिंतक डॉक्टर एंथोनी मोंटेरियो , मुहम्मद अबेल के साथ साथ मुझे भी अध्यक्ष मंडल में शामिल किया गया ।

     Saturday Free School से जुड़ी नेहा सी वी  ने उनके  जीवन संदेश पर एक बहुत ही सुंदर डॉक्यूमेंट्री फिल्म बनाई है जिसे कार्यक्रम के प्रारंभ में प्रदर्शित किया गया।

    चर्चा का शुभारंभ युवा विचारक मेघना चंद्रा किया जिसमें उन्होंने विषय तथा आयोजन की जानकारी दी । तत्पश्चात जहान चौधरी ने कार्यक्रम को प्रस्तुत करते हुए दुनियां के बदलते हालात के मद्देनजर शांतिपूर्ण अहिंसक परिवर्तन की आवश्यकता पर प्रकाश डाला। 

   अपने वक्तव्य में डॉक्टर एंथोनी मोंटेरियो का कहना था कि दुनियां बेहद संकट के दौर से गुजर रही है ।  साम्राज्य वादी निरंकुश शक्तियां हर जगह युद्ध, हिंसा और नफ़रत का माहौल बना रहीं है । ऐसे समय में सभी शांति कर्मियों को एक मंच पर इकठ्ठे होकरएक नई व्यवस्था की स्थापना के लिए काम करना चाहिए ।

  मुहम्मद अबेल का मानना था कि अहिंसा ही शांति का मार्ग प्रशस्त करेगी । युद्ध और हिंसा तात्कालिक दवाब तो बना सकती है परंतु स्थाई शांति प्रेम और करुणा ही देगा । पैगम्बर हजरत मुहम्मद साहब ने अपने हर संदेश में अमन और दोस्ती के बारे में कहा । परिवर्तन मन से होगा जिसका प्रदर्शन कार्यों से होगा ।

   मैने भी अपने विचार प्रकट करते हुए दक्षिण एशियाई देशों में भाईचारे और विश्वाश की आवश्यकता पर प्रकाश डालते हुए विगत समय में पश्चिमी देशों के हस्तक्षेप की चर्चा की और बताया कि परिवर्तन निरंतर जारी रहने वाली एक प्रक्रिया है जो विचारों के माध्यम से ही संभव है ।

    लगभग अढ़ाई घंटे तक चले इस संवाद में अनेक युवा साथियों ने अपने प्रश्न पूछे जिनकी अध्यक्ष मंडल के सदस्यों ने हर संभव उत्तर दिया ।

अंत में भारत की पूर्वा चैटर्जी, आदि ने भी अपने विचार व्यक्त किए ।

   इस अवसर पर मेरे द्वारा प्रस्तुत विचार के कुछ अंश निम्नलिखित है:-

     Chicago has been the city of my dreams. A revolutionary and spiritual city. We have been inspired by this city since childhood, one of the reasons is that it was in this city that a major non-violent movement of workers took place for an 8 hour workday in 1886. A protest at Haymarket Square was met fired on by the police and the bleeding workers painted the a flag red their blood. This red flag has become a symbol for the Satyagrahis struggling for the fulfillment of their objectives all over the world. This is is a call saying that no matter how cruel the oppressor is, he can be countered with truth and non-violence.

    Secondly, this is the city where Swami Vivekananda, a young Indian monk, shared the original basis of religion, especially Hinduism, in the World Parliament of Religions held in 1893. He argued that the ancient sages to the present, true religion is to be is full of love for all and to reject all narrow-mindedness and sectarianism.

     I consider myself blessed to have come to this city. For me it is nothing less than a pilgrimage. I am proud and overwhelmed by these moments.

    While paying homage to those immortal martyrs on May 1, I also bow down to our great monk Swami Vivekananda who paved the way for peaceful non-violent revolution.

 I am also very happy to learn that Chicago is a center of the life of the African American people and a site of many battles in the great Black Freedom Struggle, whose struggle for democracy gathers us all together today.

   Today the whole world is passing through a period of war, violence and unrest. There are only two options before it: destruction or mutual co-existence. Surely the other way is better.

    The subject of my speech at a special session to be held in Chicago on the occasion of the Parliament of the World's Religions will be

   Claiming the gift of Humanity: Message of India in present context and the future of Revolutionary Non-Violence.

     15 August marks the independence of India. However, the day that India’s independent flag was hurled in Delhi in 1947, the leader of its freedom movement, Mahatma Gandhi was in Calcutta. While 15 August brought India freedom, the last act of the British was to cruelly partition the country leading to immense bloodshed and violence. During the last years of his life, Gandhiji went from village to village fighting for unity and peace at grave threat to his life. 

The partition of India into India and Pakistan, and eventually India, Pakistan and Bangladesh has led to constant conflict. Mahatma Gandhi’s dream was that India would be peaceful and united and it is a dream that we work towards today. 

       The role of the US government in Asia is known in the case of Korea and Vietnam. However, while India never had to face a direct conflict from the US, we have been the target of covert operations. The historical role of the US government has been to increase tension and conflict in the region. The US leadership consistently opposed India’s foreign policy of nonalignment alignment and peaceful co-existence, including through the takeover of the entire island of Diego Garcia for a US military base, arming to the teeth military regimes in Pakistan including during the brutal massacre of Bangladeshi civilians in 1971, and US deployment of the seventh naval fleet to threaten India with nuclear weapons during the Bangladesh LIberation War.

     Nevertheless, in the early 1970s, the South Asian subcontinent saw a golden age with the possibility of peace and cooperation. Indira Gandhi came to power with a landslide victory in 1971. That same year, Bangladesh was liberated under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The military leadership in Pakistan was overturned and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto became the country’s first elected leader. Sri Lanka separated from the British Empire in 1972 under the leadership of Srimavo Bandarnaike. All these four countries had heads of state who were committed to a form of socialism, secularism and peace. 

                       This situation became unacceptable to the US ruling elite and the activities of the CIA increased greatly. In 1975, Bangladesh’s Mujibur Rahman was assassinated. Pakistan’s PM Bhutto was deposed in a military coup in 1977 and later hanged. Insurgency was spread in India in India and Indira Gandhi was vilified and eventually assassinated in 1984. South Asia is yet to recover from the impact of these assassinations. There is no doubt that these policies of destablizaton are the actions of the US deep state, the same force which targeted Martin Luther King Jr and the nonviolent movement in the US.

         After the fall of the Soviet Union, India’s economy was opened up and new relations with the US were established. A section of the Indian people started seeing economic opportunities in the US. They think that the US is a heavenly escape from conditions in India. However, they do not know or understand the true America. 

        Indians and the American people share a deep bond because we are the lands that have given the world two Mahatmas, two great souls, Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. While the American ruling elite was conspiring against India, the American people approached India in a very different way through struggles for civil rights, democracy, and world peace. Our peoples are connected in a deep historical bond. In India, we know and respect Martin Luther King Jr. 

      Mahatma Gandhi taught the world ahimsa and satyagraha, non-violence and truth-force. Further, he taught the Indian people abhaya or courage. Non-violence is a fundamental belief in human beings and humanity. It is not weak but a strong force which allows us to resist injustice. Satyagraha is a call for us to always follow the path of truth. The future requires a nonviolent struggle for the truth. Today, we celebrate James Lawson. In doing so, we celebrate both Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi. 

     We at Gandhi Global Family are deeply committed to this legacy. We see ourselves as soldiers of peace who are part of a movement of world peace. We seek to learn from the legacy of Revered James Lawson, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Dr. W.E.B Du Bois. The world needs non-violence in international relations so we can move peacefully towards the truth. A real nonviolent movement will require us to confront all forms of injustice including racism, poverty, and war. The world awaits the American people answering the call of Martin Luther King Jr, to transform the unjust structures of this society and thereby transform the world. We join hand in hand with the American people in their fight for world peace. The Indian and American people can play a decisive role in the birth of a new peaceful world order and that is our prayer for the future.
