चर्चिल लेन से उठता गांधी का संदेश: क्या हम भी बन सकते हैं "वन मैन आर्मी"?— राम मोहन राय /05.08.2026

एम्स्टर्डम (नीदरलैंड) की चर्चिल लेन पर स्थापित महात्मा गांधी की प्रतिमा के समक्ष श्रद्धासुमन अर्पित करते हुए मन अनेक भावों से भर उठा। मेरे साथ चर्च ऑफ़ साइंटोलॉजी के श्री गर्ब्रांड डेनियम, सुश्री पैट्रिशिया हैमन, युवा गांधी कार्यकर्ता रॉबर्ट तथा मेरी धर्मपत्नी श्रीमती कृष्णा कांता राय भी उपस्थित थीं। यह केवल श्रद्धांजलि का कार्यक्रम नहीं था, बल्कि इतिहास, वर्तमान और भविष्य के बीच एक गहन संवाद का अवसर था।
सबसे अधिक आश्चर्य मुझे इस बात का हुआ कि गांधीजी की प्रतिमा जिस स्थान पर स्थापित है, उसका नाम चर्चिल लेन है। इतिहास के विद्यार्थी जानते हैं कि ब्रिटेन के तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री विंस्टन चर्चिल महात्मा गांधी के सबसे बड़े आलोचकों में थे। उन्होंने गांधीजी को कभी सम्मान की दृष्टि से नहीं देखा और उन्हें अपमानजनक शब्दों में "अधनंगा फ़कीर" कहा। गोलमेज सम्मेलन के समय भी गांधीजी की सादगीपूर्ण भारतीय वेशभूषा उन्हें स्वीकार्य नहीं थी।
लेकिन इतिहास की सबसे बड़ी विशेषता यही है कि वह सत्ता नहीं, सत्य का सम्मान करता है। आज उसी चर्चिल के नाम वाली सड़क पर महात्मा गांधी की प्रतिमा विश्व को यह संदेश दे रही है कि अंततः विजय शक्ति की नहीं, सत्य और नैतिकता की होती है।
समय के साथ चर्चिल को भी यह स्वीकार करना पड़ा कि जो कार्य विशाल सेनाएँ नहीं कर सकीं, वह कार्य गांधी ने अकेले कर दिखाया। उन्होंने बिना हथियारों के साम्राज्य की नींव हिला दी, सांप्रदायिक हिंसा को शांत किया और करोड़ों लोगों के हृदयों में आशा का दीप जलाया। वास्तव में गांधी एक "वन मैन आर्मी" थे।
आज यह प्रश्न हम सबके सामने खड़ा है—क्या हमारे भीतर भी ऐसा साहस, ऐसा नैतिक बल और ऐसा समर्पण है कि हम अकेले होकर भी सत्य के पक्ष में खड़े हो सकें?
रवीन्द्रनाथ ठाकुर ने लिखा था—
"यदि तोर डाक सुने केउ ना आसे, तबे एकला चलो रे।"
आज इस कविता का महत्व पहले से कहीं अधिक बढ़ गया है। पूरी दुनिया युद्ध, आतंक, हिंसा, घृणा, असहिष्णुता, मानसिक तनाव और पर्यावरणीय संकटों से जूझ रही है। ऐसे समय में केवल सरकारों या बड़े संगठनों की ओर देखना पर्याप्त नहीं है। परिवर्तन का इतिहास हमेशा कुछ समर्पित व्यक्तियों ने लिखा है।
आज आवश्यकता है कि प्रत्येक नागरिक अपने भीतर सोए हुए गांधी को जगाए। प्रत्येक व्यक्ति अपने जीवन को समाज के लिए समर्पित करे। हर घर, हर गाँव, हर शहर में ऐसे लोग खड़े हों जो बिना किसी पद, प्रतिष्ठा या स्वार्थ के मानवता की सेवा करें।
गांधी ग्लोबल फैमिली इसी विचार की एक विनम्र पहल है। हमारा विश्वास है कि सेवा के लिए भव्य भवनों, बड़े कार्यालयों, विशाल बैंक बैलेंस या संस्थागत वैभव की आवश्यकता नहीं होती। आवश्यकता केवल ईमानदार नीयत, मानवीय संवेदनशीलता और अटूट प्रतिबद्धता की होती है।
गांधीजी ने साबरमती और सेवाग्राम जैसे आश्रम बनाए, लेकिन वे कभी आश्रमों के मोह में नहीं बँधे। उनके लिए आश्रम साधन था, साध्य नहीं। जब समय ने पुकारा तो वे लोगों के बीच निकल पड़े। आज दुर्भाग्य से अनेक संस्थाएँ अपने मूल उद्देश्य से भटक गई हैं। सेवा की जगह संपत्ति का संरक्षण और विचारों की जगह व्यक्तियों का महिमामंडन अधिक दिखाई देता है। गांधी के नाम पर चलने वाले अनेक संगठन गांधी के विचारों को समाज तक पहुँचाने में अपेक्षित भूमिका नहीं निभा पा रहे हैं।
हमें यह स्वीकार करना होगा कि गांधी का नाम लेकर सम्मान प्राप्त करना आसान है, लेकिन गांधी का जीवन जीना कठिन है। गांधी की तस्वीरें लगाना सरल है, पर उनके आदर्शों को अपने व्यवहार में उतारना ही सच्ची श्रद्धांजलि है।
जब किसी ने महात्मा गांधी से पूछा—"आपका संदेश क्या है?" उन्होंने उत्तर दिया—
"मेरा जीवन ही मेरा संदेश है।"
यही वाक्य आज भी हमारे लिए सबसे बड़ा मार्गदर्शन है। यदि हमारा जीवन सत्य, अहिंसा, प्रेम, सेवा, करुणा और समर्पण का संदेश बन जाए, तो हमें किसी और परिचय की आवश्यकता नहीं रहेगी।
आइए, हम संकल्प लें कि हम गांधी को केवल स्मृति तक सीमित नहीं रखेंगे, बल्कि उन्हें अपने जीवन का व्यवहार बनाएँगे। हम किसी और के आगे आने की प्रतीक्षा नहीं करेंगे। हम स्वयं आगे बढ़ेंगे। यदि प्रत्येक व्यक्ति अपने भीतर एक "वन मैन आर्मी" तैयार कर ले, तो विश्व शांति, सामाजिक सद्भाव और मानवीय एकता का नया अध्याय अवश्य लिखा जा सकता है।
आज गांधी को श्रद्धांजलि देने का सर्वोत्तम मार्ग यही है कि हम उनके नाम का नहीं, उनके काम का विस्तार करें। यही समय की पुकार है, यही मानवता की आवश्यकता है और यही भविष्य का मार्ग है।

Standing before the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on Churchilllaan (Churchill Lane) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and offering my floral tribute, I was overwhelmed with emotion. Accompanying me were Mr. Gerbrand Deninum of the Church of Scientology, Ms. Patricia Haiman, young Gandhian activist Robert, and my wife Mrs. Krishna Kanta Rai. This was not merely a tribute to Gandhi; it was an opportunity for a profound dialogue between history, the present, and the future.
What surprised me the most was that Gandhi's statue stands on a road named after Winston Churchill. Students of history know that Churchill, the then Prime Minister of Britain, was one of Mahatma Gandhi's strongest critics. He never viewed Gandhi with respect and famously referred to him as a "half-naked fakir." Even during the Round Table Conference, Gandhi's simple Indian attire was unacceptable to Churchill.
Yet, the greatest lesson history teaches us is that it ultimately honours truth, not power. Today, on a street bearing Churchill's name, Mahatma Gandhi's statue stands as a timeless reminder that, in the end, truth and moral courage triumph over force and authority.
With the passage of time, even Churchill had to acknowledge that Gandhi had accomplished what mighty armies could not. Without weapons, Gandhi shook the foundations of the British Empire, calmed communal violence, and ignited hope in the hearts of millions. In the truest sense, Gandhi was a "One-Man Army."
This raises an important question for all of us today: Do we possess the courage, moral strength, and commitment to stand for truth, even if we have to stand alone?
Rabindranath Tagore wrote:
"If no one responds to your call, then walk alone."

The significance of these words is even greater today. Our world is struggling with wars, terrorism, violence, hatred, intolerance, mental stress, and environmental crises. At such a time, it is not enough to rely solely on governments or large institutions. History has repeatedly shown that meaningful change has often begun with a few dedicated individuals.
The need of the hour is for every citizen to awaken the Gandhi within. Each individual should dedicate his or her life to the service of society. Every home, every village, and every city needs people who are willing to serve humanity selflessly, without seeking position, prestige, or personal gain.
Gandhi Global Family is a humble initiative inspired by this very vision. We firmly believe that service does not require magnificent buildings, large offices, huge bank balances, or institutional grandeur. What it truly requires is honest intention, human compassion, and unwavering commitment.
Mahatma Gandhi established ashrams such as Sabarmati and Sevagram, but he was never attached to them. For him, the ashram was a means, not the ultimate goal. Whenever the nation called, he stepped out and worked among the people. Sadly, many institutions today have drifted away from their original purpose. Protecting property often takes precedence over serving people, and glorifying individuals sometimes overshadows the ideals they were meant to uphold. Many organizations working in Gandhi's name have yet to fulfil their responsibility of carrying his message effectively to society.
We must honestly acknowledge that it is easy to gain recognition by invoking Gandhi's name, but it is far more difficult to live according to his ideals. Displaying Gandhi's photographs is simple; embodying his principles in our daily lives is the truest tribute we can offer.
When someone once asked Mahatma Gandhi, "What is your message?" he replied:
"My life is my message."
These words remain one of the greatest sources of guidance for humanity. If our lives become a message of truth, non-violence, love, service, compassion, and selfless dedication, we will need no other introduction.
Let us therefore resolve not to confine Gandhi to memories and commemorations, but to make his ideals a living part of our daily conduct. Let us not wait for someone else to take the first step. Let each of us move forward. If every individual develops the courage to become a "One-Man Army" for truth and humanity, a new chapter of world peace, social harmony, and human unity can surely be written.
The finest tribute we can pay to Mahatma Gandhi today is not merely to honour his name, but to carry forward his work and his values. That is the call of our times, the need of humanity, and the path to a better future.
