To Gerbrig Deinum – A Friend Beyond Borders

There are moments in life that become memories, and there are people who become part of our journey forever.

When I travelled to the Netherlands, I expected to discover a beautiful country. What I did not expect was to discover a beautiful friendship. Meeting you has become one of the most treasured memories of my visit.

Our first meeting on 8 July 2026 at the Sant Nirankari Mission gathering in Amsterdam seemed like a simple coincidence. Yet, looking back today, I feel it was destined. Your gentle smile, humble nature and gracious words immediately created a feeling of warmth and trust.

When you later welcomed us to the Church of Scientology, you did much more than introduce us to an organization. You introduced us to your values—respect, compassion, openness and service to humanity. Before meeting you, I knew very little about Scientology. Through you, I came to understand that every sincere effort to uplift humanity deserves appreciation and respect.

One of the greatest honours of my visit was your invitation to speak during the celebration of Nelson Mandela's Birthday on the influence of Mahatma Gandhi on Mandela's life. I remain deeply grateful for your confidence in me. If my words touched even a few hearts that day, it was because you created the opportunity with such generosity.

I shall always remember our visit to the Gandhi Statue on Churchilllaan in Amsterdam. Standing together with Robert and Patricia, paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, discussing peace, non-violence and the future of humanity—it was a deeply moving experience. It reminded me that Gandhi does not belong to India alone; he belongs to the conscience of the world.

The evening we shared over a vegetarian dinner will also remain close to my heart. It was not simply a meal; it was the beginning of a meaningful dialogue between two cultures, two organizations and two friends who believe that humanity is greater than all divisions. We spoke about building bridges of friendship and working together for peace, ethical values and human dignity.

During my stay in the Netherlands, every meeting with you strengthened my faith that true friendship has no nationality, no religion and no borders. It is built upon kindness, trust and a shared commitment to serve others.

You are an intelligent, thoughtful and compassionate woman whose life reflects quiet dedication rather than loud words. Your simplicity, humility and sincere concern for people make you truly special. These are qualities that cannot be learned from books; they come from the heart.

Among the many wonderful experiences of my journey, meeting you is one of my greatest blessings. I sincerely believe that our friendship is more than a personal relationship. It is a bridge between India and the Netherlands, between the Church of Scientology and Gandhi Global Family, and above all, between people who dream of a peaceful and compassionate world.

Our beloved peace pilgrim Nirmala Deshpande often reminded us that love, dialogue and service are the strongest foundations of peace. I see these values reflected in your life and work.

May your smile continue to bring hope to others. May your dedication inspire many more people. May your journey of service grow stronger with every passing year.

Thank you for your friendship, your generosity and your faith in the power of humanity. I shall always cherish our friendship and look forward to many more opportunities to work together for peace and human dignity.

गेरब्रिग डेइनम  : नीदरलैंड की धरती पर मिली एक गांधीवादी मित्र

यात्राएँ केवल नए देशों और शहरों से परिचय नहीं करातीं, वे मनुष्यों से भी मिलवाती हैं। कुछ लोग यात्रा समाप्त होने के बाद स्मृतियों से धुंधले पड़ जाते हैं, जबकि कुछ अपने व्यक्तित्व, विचारों और आत्मीयता के कारण जीवनभर के लिए हमारे हृदय में बस जाते हैं। नीदरलैंड की एक माह सात दिन की यात्रा की ऐसी ही सबसे मधुर स्मृतियों में एक नाम है—सुश्री गेरब्रिग डेइनम।

8 जुलाई 2026 को एम्स्टर्डम में हमारी पहली भेंट हुई। गांधी ग्लोबल फैमिली के प्रतिनिधिमंडल के रूप में हम संत निरंकारी मिशन के एक समागम में सम्मिलित होने पहुँचे थे। वहीं गेरब्रिग डेनियम से परिचय हुआ। उन्होंने अत्यंत सहजता से बताया कि वे चर्च ऑफ़ साइंटोलॉजी में जनसंपर्क विभाग का दायित्व निभाती हैं। कुछ ही मिनटों की बातचीत में उनकी सादगी, आत्मीयता और विनम्रता ने हमें गहराई से प्रभावित किया। ऐसा लगा मानो वर्षों पुराना परिचय हो।

उनके निमंत्रण पर 18 जुलाई को हम चर्च ऑफ़ साइंटोलॉजी के कार्यालय पहुँचे। वहाँ उन्होंने संस्था के विभिन्न मानवीय कार्यक्रमों, नशामुक्ति अभियानों, नैतिक मूल्यों के प्रसार और सामाजिक सेवा के कार्यों का विस्तार से परिचय कराया। सच कहूँ तो इससे पहले हम साइंटोलॉजी के बारे में बहुत कम जानते थे, लेकिन उस दिन हमें केवल एक संस्था का परिचय ही नहीं मिला, बल्कि एक ऐसे व्यक्तित्व से मिलने का अवसर मिला जिसके लिए सेवा, संवेदना और मानवता केवल शब्द नहीं, बल्कि जीवन का उद्देश्य हैं।

कुछ दिनों बाद चर्च ऑफ़ साइंटोलॉजी में नेल्सन मंडेला की जयंती का आयोजन हुआ। गेरब्रिग डेनियम ने मुझे "महात्मा गांधी के विचारों का नेल्सन मंडेला पर प्रभाव" विषय पर वक्तव्य देने के लिए आमंत्रित किया। यह मेरे लिए सम्मान का विषय था। मैंने गांधीजी के सत्य, अहिंसा और प्रेम के संदेश तथा मंडेला के संघर्ष में उनकी प्रेरणा पर अपने विचार रखे। कार्यक्रम के बाद अनेक लोगों ने अपने विचार साझा किए और मेरे वक्तव्य की सराहना की। किंतु मैं इसका श्रेय स्वयं को नहीं, बल्कि गेरब्रिग डेनियम को देता हूँ, जिन्होंने मुझ पर विश्वास करते हुए मुझे यह अवसर प्रदान किया।

इसके बाद हमारी कई मुलाकातें हुईं। हर मुलाकात में गांधी, शांति, मानवाधिकार, अंतरधार्मिक संवाद और विश्वबंधुत्व पर गंभीर चर्चा होती रही। मैंने पाया कि गेरब्रिग   महात्मा गांधी के विचारों के प्रति अत्यंत जिज्ञासु हैं। वे गांधी को केवल इतिहास के एक महान व्यक्ति के रूप में नहीं, बल्कि आज की दुनिया की आवश्यकता के रूप में देखती हैं।

इसी भावना के साथ उन्होंने प्रस्ताव रखा कि हम सब एम्स्टर्डम की चर्चिललान स्थित महात्मा गांधी की प्रतिमा पर जाकर श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करें। इस कार्यक्रम में उन्होंने अपने सहयोगी रॉबर्ट तथा गांधी अध्येता पैट्रिशिया हेमन को भी आमंत्रित किया। गांधी प्रतिमा के समीप लगभग एक घंटे तक हम सबने अहिंसा, सत्य, करुणा और विश्व शांति पर विचार-विमर्श किया। वह दृश्य मेरे लिए अत्यंत प्रेरणादायक था—एक विदेशी धरती पर विभिन्न देशों और संस्कृतियों के लोग गांधी के विचारों के माध्यम से एक सूत्र में बँधे हुए थे।

श्रद्धांजलि के पश्चात गेरब्रिग हमें एक डच रेस्तराँ में रात्रि-भोज के लिए ले गईं। उन्होंने स्वयं भी हमारे साथ शाकाहारी भोजन किया। वह भोजन केवल एक औपचारिक आतिथ्य नहीं था; वह विश्वास, सम्मान और आत्मीयता का प्रतीक था। भोजन के दौरान हमारी चर्चा इस बात पर केंद्रित रही कि चर्च ऑफ़ साइंटोलॉजी और गांधी ग्लोबल फैमिली मिलकर विश्व शांति, मानव सेवा, अंतरधार्मिक सद्भाव और मानवीय मूल्यों के प्रसार के लिए किस प्रकार संयुक्त रूप से कार्य कर सकते हैं।

गेरब्रिग डेनियम उन विरले व्यक्तित्वों में हैं जो अपने व्यवहार से ही अपने विचारों का परिचय दे देते हैं। उनके भीतर एक ऐसे विश्व का स्वप्न जीवित है जहाँ मनुष्य, मनुष्य का शोषण न करे; जहाँ पीड़ित, वंचित और असहाय लोगों को सहारा मिले; जहाँ करुणा, सहयोग और सेवा जीवन का आधार बनें। उनकी सरलता, सहज मुस्कान और सकारात्मक ऊर्जा हर मिलने वाले को अपना बना लेती है।

जब मैं अपनी इस यात्रा को स्मरण करता हूँ तो अनेक सुंदर दृश्य आँखों के सामने उभर आते हैं, परंतु उनमें गेरब्रिग डेनियम से हुई मित्रता एक विशेष उपलब्धि के रूप में दिखाई देती है। यह मित्रता केवल दो व्यक्तियों की नहीं, बल्कि दो संस्कृतियों, दो देशों और दो मानवीय विचारधाराओं के बीच बने विश्वास के पुल का प्रतीक है। मुझे विश्वास है कि भविष्य में यह संवाद और सहयोग विश्व शांति तथा मानव कल्याण के लिए नए आयाम स्थापित करेगा।

पूज्य निर्मला देशपांडे जी कहा करती थीं—"मानव सेवा ही ईश्वर की सच्ची उपासना है।" गेरब्रिग का जीवन इस विचार को सार्थक करता है। ईश्वर से हमारी प्रार्थना है कि वे सदैव स्वस्थ, प्रसन्न और सेवामय जीवन जिएँ, उनकी सहज मुस्कान यूँ ही संसार को आलोकित करती रहे और वे मानवता के लिए निरंतर प्रेरणा का स्रोत बनी रहें।

नीदरलैंड की इस यात्रा से लौटते समय हम केवल स्मृतियाँ ही नहीं, बल्कि एक सच्ची मित्रता, एक साझा मानवीय संकल्प और विश्व शांति के लिए नए सहयोग का विश्वास भी अपने साथ लेकर लौटे। यही इस यात्रा की सबसे बड़ी उपलब्धि है।
