Gandhi Global Family Hosts a Meaningful Interaction on Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and W. E. B. Du Bois
New Delhi, October 2026: A remarkable and thought-provoking meeting took place at the residence of Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Union Minister and President of Gandhi Global Family (GGF), with Dr. Anthony Monteiro, renowned African-American Gandhian, scholar, public intellectual and peace activist, during his ongoing peace pilgrimage to India.
The meeting provided an important platform for an exchange of ideas on one of the most pressing challenges confronting humanity today: how to establish lasting peace in a world increasingly troubled by armed conflicts, violence, hatred and humanitarian crises.
Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad and Dr. Monteiro shared their perspectives on the urgent need to strengthen the global movement for peace and nonviolence. Several distinguished political leaders and eminent personalities present on the occasion also interacted with Dr. Monteiro, contributing to a wide-ranging discussion on international peace, human dignity, social justice and the future of humanity.
The discussions assumed particular significance in the present international context, when the clouds of war and military confrontation have cast a shadow over several regions, including Europe and West Asia. The devastating consequences of armed conflicts, including attacks on civilian populations, have raised grave concerns about the future of international peace and security.
The suffering of vulnerable communities, particularly women and children, has emerged as one of the most painful aspects of these conflicts. The humanitarian catastrophe in Palestine, especially in Gaza, has deeply disturbed the conscience of humanity and reinforced the urgent need for an end to violence, the protection of civilians and a just and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Against this backdrop, the interaction between Shri Azad and Dr. Monteiro highlighted the continuing relevance of the ideas and legacies of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Dr. W. E. B. Du Bois. Their struggles, though rooted in different historical and social contexts, offer enduring lessons in nonviolence, racial equality, human rights, democracy and the pursuit of justice.
The two leaders emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from these great thinkers and movements to promote a peaceful, inclusive and nonviolent world order. Their exchange underscored the need for dialogue over confrontation, mutual understanding over hatred, and cooperation over the use of force.
The meeting also reflected the broader purpose of Dr. Monteiro’s peace pilgrimage to India, which seeks to reconnect the democratic and freedom struggles associated with Gandhi, King and Du Bois and to explore their relevance to contemporary global challenges.
The programme concluded with a gracious luncheon hosted by Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad at his residence. A formal expression of gratitude followed, acknowledging the host, Dr. Monteiro, members of his delegation and the distinguished political leaders and other eminent guests who participated in the gathering.
The meeting served as a meaningful reminder that peace is not merely the absence of war; it requires justice, compassion, equality and a collective commitment to the dignity of every human being. At a time when the world is searching for pathways out of conflict, the ideals of Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and W. E. B. Du Bois continue to offer a powerful moral foundation for building a more humane and peaceful future.
