Gandhi Global Family Report
Panipat Welcomes African-American Gandhian Dr. Anthony Monteiro
From Children’s Education to Global Peace: A Shared Message of Equality, Non-Violence and Social Justice

Panipat, Haryana | 13–14 October 2026

Panipat, the historic city of Haryana, witnessed two meaningful engagements with renowned African-American Gandhian scholar, intellectual and peace activist Dr. Anthony Monteiro during his visit to the city as part of his 15-day India tour. The programmes brought together children, educators, social activists, academics, Gandhians, representatives of political parties, trade unions, farmers’ organisations and civil society to discuss the enduring relevance of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Dr. W. E. B. Du Bois in the struggle for peace, equality, democracy and social justice.

Organised around the shared ideals of non-violence, human dignity and a world free from discrimination, the engagements highlighted the importance of educating younger generations and strengthening people-to-people solidarity across national boundaries.

## Dialogue with Children at Hali Apna School

On 13 October, Dr. Monteiro interacted with children at Hali Apna School, an educational initiative run by the Nirmala Deshpande Sansthan (NDS), Panipat. The programme provided an opportunity for the students to engage directly with an internationally recognised scholar and peace activist on issues affecting their future and the future of humanity.

Emphasising the importance of children in shaping the world, Dr. Monteiro said that children are the future of India and every other country. He underlined the urgent need to build a just world free from racism, racial discrimination, inequality, exploitation and all forms of prejudice.

He observed that racism and racial discrimination are not merely concerns affecting non-white communities in the United States; they constitute a serious challenge to humanity as a whole. Developing values of equality, compassion, justice and peace among children, he stressed, is essential to overcoming these injustices.

Dr. Monteiro's India visit represents an important intellectual journey connecting the ideas and struggles of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Dr. W. E. B. Du Bois. Their shared commitment to human dignity, democracy and justice continues to offer inspiration for addressing contemporary global challenges.

The children welcomed Dr. Monteiro and his delegation with colourful cultural performances. School Principal Pooja Saini introduced the visitors to the school's educational activities and its wider social mission.

The students asked thoughtful questions about education, social transformation, racial discrimination, equal opportunities, and relations between India and the United States. Dr. Monteiro responded to their questions and encouraged them to become sensitive, informed and responsible citizens committed to building a more just and peaceful society.

### Hali Apna School: Education as an Instrument of Social Transformation

Hali Apna School, run by the Nirmala Deshpande Sansthan, seeks to provide educational opportunities to children while nurturing human values, social equality, mutual respect and responsible citizenship. Its approach extends beyond classroom learning to the holistic development of children and the empowerment of underprivileged sections of society.

Inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and Didi Nirmala Deshpande, the institution works to promote peace, non-violence, social harmony and public welfare.

Those present included school staff members, Advocate Sparsh Verma, Ram Mohan Rai, Director of the school and General Secretary of Gandhi Global Family, and educationist Sushma Gupta, among others.

The interaction concluded with a shared recognition that investing in children's education and cultivating values of justice, equality, compassion and peace are indispensable to creating a discrimination-free world.

## Grand Felicitation of Dr. Monteiro at Khadi Ashram, Panipat

On 14 October, a grand felicitation ceremony and discussion on the contemporary relevance of Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and W. E. B. Du Bois was organised at the Som Bhai Hall of the historic Khadi Ashram in Panipat.

The programme was jointly organised by Panipat Nagarik Manch, Khadi Ashram Panipat and Gandhi Global Family (GGF). Hundreds of citizens, including representatives of social, educational, academic and Gandhian organisations, political parties, farmers’ groups, trade unions and the legal fraternity, participated in welcoming Dr. Monteiro and his delegation.

The gathering reaffirmed the importance of strengthening international friendship and promoting a peaceful world order founded on non-violence, racial equality, democracy and social justice.

The programme was jointly conducted by Anshika Rawat and social activist Rajendra. Ram Mohan Rai, General Secretary of Gandhi Global Family, introduced Dr. Monteiro and the members of his delegation, explaining the intellectual background of the India visit and the connections between Gandhian philosophy and the struggles for racial equality and democracy in the United States.

The delegation included Archishman Raju, Nandita Chaturvedi, Sambarta Chatterjee, Purba Chatterjee, Meghna Chandra Jahan, Alice Lee and Cathy Jiang, among other members.

At the beginning of the programme, Dr. Monteiro and members of his delegation paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Nirmal Dutt, President of Panipat Nagarik Manch, delivered the welcome address. Representatives of various organisations subsequently felicitated Dr. Monteiro and expressed solidarity with his efforts to advance peace, equality and social justice.

### Relevance of Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and W. E. B. Du Bois

In his thoughtful address, Dr. Monteiro reflected on the ideas and struggles of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Dr. W. E. B. Du Bois, highlighting their continuing significance for contemporary society.

He connected their intellectual and political legacies with the broader struggles for democracy, racial equality, human dignity and social justice. Their work, the discussion emphasised, provides important guidance for confronting discrimination, exploitation, violence and social divisions in the present global context.

Dr. Monteiro's visit was viewed as more than a conventional international tour. It offered an opportunity to explore the connections between Gandhian non-violence and the movements against racial discrimination in the United States, while strengthening dialogue and people-to-people friendship between India and America.

Participants stressed that international cooperation, tolerance and mutual understanding are increasingly necessary in a world confronted by war, hatred, racism and social fragmentation.

### Panipat's Historical and Gandhian Legacy

The discussion also highlighted Panipat's historical importance and its association with the Gandhian tradition of peace and reconciliation.

Speakers recalled Mahatma Gandhi's visits to Panipat on 10 November and 9 December 1947, in the aftermath of Partition, when communal tensions and a grave humanitarian crisis had created an urgent need for peace, harmony and mutual trust.

Established in 1952, the Khadi Ashram continues to symbolise service, self-reliance, communal harmony and constructive social work. The venue provided a fitting setting for a gathering dedicated to Gandhi's ideals and their relevance to the contemporary struggle for justice.

Participants emphasised that the legacies of Gandhi, King and Du Bois should not be confined to historical remembrance. Their ideas must inform present-day efforts to eliminate inequality, racism, exploitation and violence and to create a more equitable world.

### Broad Participation from Civil Society and Political Organisations

The felicitation ceremony brought together a wide cross-section of Panipat's civic life.

Among those present were Bintu Malik of the Farmers’ Union; Satish Gehlotara, President of the Block Congress; Irshad Ali of the BJP Minority Morcha; Vedpal Tyagi, District President of the Haryana Gyan Vigyan Samiti; Rajendra, State General Secretary of the All India Agricultural and Rural Labour Union; Daryao Singh Kashyap, State Secretary of the Communist Party of India; Dr. Surender Malik, District Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist); and Sunil Dutt, State Secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions.

The legal fraternity was represented by Pradeep Kumar Ahlawat, former Vice-President of the Panipat Bar Association; Neelam Saini, Advocate; Nakul, former District Bar President; Advocate Surat Singh; Advocate Sparsh Verma; Advocate Jitender Kundu; and Advocate Sunil Sharma.

Pooja Saini, General Secretary of the Nirmala Deshpande Sansthan and Mata Sita Rani Seva Sanstha, and Shaista Chaudhary, Secretary of the institution, also participated. Other attendees included Kaushalya Devi; Rameshwar Das, State Secretary of the Progressive Writers’ Association; Pradeep Bansal and Bhanu; Advocate Sanjay Kumar of the Awami Ekta Manch; Kanchan Sagar, President of the Nari Kalyan Samiti; Anu Kalra, Regional Coordinator of Inner Wheel, and Jyotsna Garg, its President; and Poonam Devi, Secretary of the Mahila Sabha.

Representatives of Arya Samaj included Balraj Ilabadi and Arya Suresh Malik. Also present were Irshad Ali Ansari, State President of the All India Momin Ansari Samaj; Babu Malik, Convener of Khudai Khidmatgar; Sudeep Sangwan, President of the Integrated Ex-Servicemen Organisation; Dr. Vijay Singh, faculty member at Arya College; Ravi Kumar and Satpal Singh of the Freedom Fighters’ Descendants Organisation; and Rakesh, Secretary of the Dalit Utthan Sangathan.

Numerous other social workers, educators, intellectuals and citizens from Panipat city and the surrounding district attended the gathering.

The programme concluded with an interactive session, a vote of thanks and an informal gathering over refreshments, providing participants with further opportunities to exchange ideas and strengthen relationships.

## A Shared Commitment to Peace, Equality and Human Dignity

Together, the two engagements in Panipat connected the concerns of children and education with the wider global struggle for peace and social justice. The interaction at Hali Apna School emphasised the importance of nurturing equality, compassion and critical awareness among young people, while the public felicitation at Khadi Ashram brought together a broad coalition of citizens committed to Gandhi's legacy and the universal ideals of justice and non-violence.

For Gandhi Global Family and its associated initiatives, these programmes represented an opportunity to carry forward the message of Didi Nirmala Deshpande and Mahatma Gandhi through education, dialogue and international friendship.

The central message emerging from Panipat was clear: a peaceful and just world cannot be built through political declarations alone. It requires sustained public engagement, education rooted in human values, resistance to every form of discrimination and a collective commitment to the dignity of every human being.

By bringing together children, educators, Gandhians, academics, workers, farmers, social activists and citizens across political affiliations, Dr. Anthony Monteiro's visit reaffirmed the continuing relevance of Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and W. E. B. Du Bois in the global pursuit of a world free from racism, inequality, exploitation and violence.
